Ball grinding bollocks

I already know that a bunch of people are gonna be offended by that subject line. Which means I’m about to get a flurry of abusive emails.

And you know what?

Bring it on.

Because I’ve seen some crap sprouted recently in forums about open and click through rates in emails.

Things like…

If you don’t get a 40% open rate then you’re doing it wrong

You should get at least a 10% click through on every email

Never email more than once or twice a week, you’ll piss your readers off

Give lots of free content to your readers, but only sell occasionally

I mean, what a mind-numbing bunch of balls.

So here’s how email marketing works…

Email your list only once or twice a week and you’ll find you get a nice high open rate, good click throughs and sell bugger all.

Don’t get me wrong, you might do quite a large number of sales through one email, but you’re going to be performing way less than someone who emails once or twice every day and puts a link in each email.

Why?

Because they’re emailing more often!

If you get a 40% open rate on every email, then I guarantee you’re not emailing enough. When someone tries to tell you that it’s a good thing, laugh in their face and tell them to try emailing more often.

Folk get scared of emailing regularly, because they’re worried they’re going to lose subscribers.

If your subscribers don’t want to get your emails, then let them unsubscribe, they’re not going to be buying anything anyway.

Your business isn’t about building an email list of people who don’t unsubscribe, it’s about building an email list of people who buy.

Big friggin difference.

I send a lot of emails. I primarily build my list with traffic that most people consider garbage. On some emails I get less than a 1% click through.

But here’s the thang…

I sell something in every single email I send.

Do I care if I only send 1% clicks if they convert at 20%?

Nope. I don’t give a scooby.

The folk who didn’t click are still reading my emails, they just didn’t want that product.

Fair nuff. I don’t want everything I’m sold either.

Doesn’t mean I don’t want to get the emails anymore.

Stop worrying about what your list will think of you. Start putting your personality into your emails, start emailing regularly, always sell something, and the folk who don’t want to read what your writing will drift away, the ones who do will stay and buy.

P.S. Oh yeah, here’s the link in this email to a neat little product that only costs a few bucks and shows you how to make $4.97 over and over and over and over and over and over etc…
