    The burning pain of success

    For the last few years, I’ve not been the most active of types. I’ve done what we we all do, talk about how I’m going to go back to the gym and get fit, but never actually doing it.

    Well… I did it. Last week.

    And as I write, I can feel the pain searing up and down the muscles in my arms.

    I’ve started doing Les Mills fitness classes. And I enjoy them. You get a whole body workout which, because I hate cardio machines, I don’t really get outside of a class.

    But however much it hurts, the pain makes me happy, because that’s an indication of success. It tells me that the classes are working, my muscles are working, and I’m beginning to get back into shape.

    Internet marketing gives you similar indications of success.

    No, not in a physical way, unless you’re running your business with someone and they’re punching you in the arm every time a sale comes in.

    Usually it hurts in a time way, because when you start to get successful, you begin to work more. You start to see your hard work paying off and you want to do more of it.

    Which is completely normal.

    That’s exactly what happened to me.

    My advice…

    …stick to your plan. Stick to your work schedule. Don’t just start doing more, because I can guarantee that 80% of the “more” you’ll be doing, will be completely wasted. It won’t be making you more money, it will just be taking up more of your time with things you don’t need to do.

    8472 times, more or less

    Over 50 years ago I began a salaried position. That means they could require any amount of work from me, e.g. 84 hours per week [performed by me on one occasion]. I continued the occupation for 33 years

    1. because in spite of the drudgery I enjoyed it 

    2. I liked the people I worked with 

    3. it provided medical insurance for the family 

    4. it had a retirement plan

    I tried that latter 8,472 times [more or less, I’ve lost count] without success. I got part-time jobs to provide for vacations and the like.

    I retired with a pension 41 years ago. I live comfortably. I get by.

    But I still don’t have the freedom you tout. And I can no longer take vacations and do all those real life things. But now I am 85, restricted to a wheelchair because of a leg amputation. I can no longer do simpler building tasks like fixing leaks, painting a back porch, repairing back steps and the like. And I am too proud to beg.

    First up… while I do have VA’s, I try to read pretty much every email. Which is how I saw Larry’s message come in.

    Larry’s tried to create an online business 8,472 times (roughly).

    That’s a lot.

    But it’s not unusual.

    In fact, I’d say it’s pretty common. He’s in the company of the majority of the internet marketing world.

    Because most of the folks out there selling how to make a bizniss online either…

    1) Don’t want you to know how, so you keep buying their crap

    2) Have only ever made an online bizniss teaching other people how to make an online bizniss

    There’s two issues there.

    Number one does actually happen. It’s not pretty, and it often comes from those gooroo types.

    Their livelihood is reliant on you repeatedly buying their products. If they give you the whole picture, then they fear you won’t need them anymore. Which you may well not. So… they only give you a piece of the pie at a time.

    Problem with that is, you eat that piece of the pie, so when you get the next piece you’ve got no idea how it connected to the previous one.

    You never actually see the entire pie in one go.

    And, unsurprisingly, that results in failure.

    It’s kinda like getting a paintbrush, not knowing what to do with it, breaking it, and then getting given paint and trying to paint without the paintbrush,

    Never gonna work!

    You need to see the whole damn picture if you wanna be successful.

    The second problem is, that loads of these folks have only ever made money online, by telling other people how to make money online.

    That’s kinda weird.

    What you want is someone who’s made online businesses in other markets that have nothing to do with teaching people how to sell online.

    Like you’re old pal Mikey here.

    I’ve made most of my businesses in gambling, one of the most competitive niches in the world!

    Because I’ve actually gone out and done it, you’re gonna find my advice is kinda different to the folk who’ve never made a business in any niche other than IM.

    If you’re the kinda person who’d like to get the entire picture, painted by someone who’s built multiple online businesses in other niches, then this is where you should tappety tap.

  • The Exotic Pet Refuge

    The Exotic Pet Refuge

    My mum’s decided to do some volunteering work, and she found an “exotic pet refuge” near by that needed some help with their admin.

    It sounded interesting, so I offered to drive her down to this refuge to meet them.

    And wow, what I saw was nothing like what I was expecting!

    We found the gate which led into it, and rang the doorbell. One of those bells where you have to spin it as fast as possible to make a sound.

    The zookeeper, Jane, came out too greet us, and what a lovely person.

    Anyhoo, this place was awesome.

    It had reptiles, snakes, alligators, monkeys, wolves, owls, meerkats, lynx and loads of wild cats.

    The story behind it is even more incredible…

    Pam, the lady who owns it, started it when someone came to her with an injured bird.

    And since then, it’s been a labour of love.

    There’s only one full-time employee, Jane. All the enclosures are built by volunteers. All the care of animals is done by volunteers, overseen by Jane.

    Pam’s son heads-up the volunteers who build the enclosures.

    They make next-to-no money.

    And the place is wonderful.

    Who’d have thought that in the middle of some fields, in the middle of a small village, in the middle of England, was a refuge that had exotic animals brought to it from some of the largest animal charities in the country.

    But here’s the thing…

    They pretty much do no marketing at the moment. At least, not compared to the big charities.

    And then I realised, the business model in Business Ignition would work for this business.

    This is something they can implement, takes very little time, and will help to grow their profile.

    The principles of making money are universal, whether you’re running an Exotic Pet Refuge, or selling ebooks.

    The sludgery of the world

    “You make a great point with what you wrote. Should we comply with the status quo working life of 8 to 5, plus overtime when the boss requires it?

    Or do we re-invent our lifestyle and take action to create a better/free’er life. We are here in this world for actually a very short time, and so do we support ourselves and our families by sacrificing our lives to the mainstream 8-5 jobs till we die? Or do we find a means of financially supporting ourselves with enough money to provide and support a family, or do we accept the status quo? I want the choice of making the money needed to support a family and be free to do the things from time to time that I and my family enjoy.

    I agree with your assessment that “life is about time”.”

    I received this email last week, and it’s so bang on, that I wanted to share it with you.

    Most of the western world follow the status quo. They follow the 8 to 5, which these days is rapidly becoming the 7:30 to 8.

    They work hard for their bosses, but receive absolutely no thank you for it. They work longer than they’re paid to, for no extra money.

    Why?

    To get the job done, and because there’s now a fear that if you don’t work hours you’re not paid to work, someone else will, and you’ll get replaced.

    Or do you, as Greg says, re-invent your lifestyle.

    Do you take action to create a better life.

    We’re born, we live and we die.

    The living bit is what so many people forget to do. Time is short, and the question is…

    Do you want to spend that short amount of time doing things for someone else, for absolutely no thank you?

    Because I’m writing to the people that believe there’s more to life. That you can actually be in control of your own life, do the things you want to do and still make enough money to enjoy the finer things.

    We live in an age where anybody can achieve this.

    And damn it, we’re lucky to do so.
