    I’ve had countless emails saying something along the lines of…

    “I’ve lost my job, I need to make some money, I don’t have a product and I’ve spent everything I’ve had on X and Y products but it didn’t work. Can you help me?”

    I reply to pretty much every email I get, but usually I’ll reply to the above email with information such as do this first… then this… when you’ve done that you should only then look at building a mailing list etc…

    Do you know what I get back most of the time?

    “But I don’t know how to do those steps, can you show me exactly.”

    And the answer is… nope.

    Because I’ve just told them exactly what to do.

    I’ve told them to go and stop buying products. To generate initial revenue by selling any skills they have through Upwork. While making money there as a freelancer, choose a niche they want to work in etc…

    But they don’t want me to show them what to do, they want me to do it for them.

    If you don’t know how to use Upwork, five minutes on Google shows you a hundred tutorials of different ways to bid for a project. I’m not going to write a guide to using a piece of software, they’ve got their own help documents and support desk.

    Yeah I’m gonna help you, I’m going to share things in these emails that work for me. I’m gonna share ways here about how to choose a niche, how to drive traffic, how to write copy and a ton more. But I’m not gonna do the work for you. If you want that then you’re in the wrong place.

    And why do people think that I’m going to do all the work for them?

    They’ve been eating too much of that gooroo pie!

    You know, the sort that says you can spend 10 minutes a day, start with nothing and be earning $10k a month in the next thirty days.

    Stop eating that pie. The outside looks nice, but the inside is empty.

    There isn’t some magical money tap on the internet. It’s a business, and you’ve gotta learn how to build it.

    Granted, once you’ve learned how to build it then it’s a heck of lot easier than offline businesses, requires a lot less time and with profit margins that are usually way higher.

    But you still gotta put the work in to get there.

    How I Write A Book In 1 Week

    For the last week I’ve been in Ireland with Holly. She’s examining over here and is pregnant, so I came over to drive her where she needs to go.

    That means apart from breakfast and dinner, I’ve had the days to myself.

    I decided before we left that I was going to write a book this week. A book which I’ve been planning for a little while, and shows step-by-step how to implement one of the simplest online business models in any niche.

    More on that in another email 😉

    As well as writing that book, I’ve also got my business to run and keep up to date with the consulting work I do.

    But we’re staying places I’ve never been before, so I also wanted to make sure that I saw them.

    Is it possible to do all that at the same time?

    Yes indeedy.

    It’s now day 6 and we’re heading home tomorrow. I’ve stayed on top of all my work and I’ve only got the finishing touches to put to the book.

    I’d like to say that I was special. That I was awesome. But anybody can do this.

    Most people’s productivity is piss poor. We’ve been conditioned to work in a completely unproductive way. Generally, although this is slowly changing, you’re paid to go to work. You’re not paid for the output you produce.

    There are of course a few notable exceptions, such as freelancers.

    Anyhoo… that’s the truth for most people.

    When you’re paid to go to work instead of for your output, you learn to become unproductive. To earn the most money for the smallest amount of effort. You have cups of tea with your co-workers, chat by the water machine etc…

    Well I like to enjoy my life to the max, which means I want to get done what needs to be done in the shortest amount of time, and then move on to something else.

    And to do this you have to focus.

    Now there’re are a bunch of things we can do in order to focus, but this is the biggest…

    Turn off you friggin emails!

    If an email notification comes in, it will take on average 15 minutes to get your brain back to where it was before that notification came in.

    That’s from a scientific study. It’s not just me spouting random figures.

    15 minutes!

    How many email notifications do you get a day?

    Yeah… that’s a lot of 15 minutes. Basically you’re getting bugger all done.

    Turn off those email notifications on your computer, phone, tablet and every single device you have. Log out of your email accounts and pretend they don’t exist.

    I guarantee that any serious emergency and you’ll get a phone call. Everything else can wait until you’ve finished what you’re doing.

    This one technique will increase your output up to ten times because you focus on the job at hand without a single distraction.

    Try it today. Turn everything off. Spend one or two hours focusing on what needs to be done. I guarantee you’ll do waaaaaay more than normal.

    Cholula’s Hot Sauce

    I’m sitting in a town in Northern Ireland called Newry.

    Earlier this morning I dropped off Holly, my wife, where she’s working. Now I’ve been getting up earlier than I used to, but 6:30am is still pretty punchy. I opted to roll out of bed and into the car to take her to work, then go back to the hotel to get ready for the day.

    The only problem was… I only had one episode left of Black Sails on Amazon Prime and it was still early, so I decided I’d start my day by watching that and then get to work.

    By 9:30am I was back on the road and looking for a place to work. Which is how I came to the Maya Cafe. A small place where me, my laptop and Cholula’s Hot Sauce (on every table) have made a home for the day.

    This is what it’s like to work online. You can be anywhere in the world. Start working at any time you want. All you need is… an internet connection.

    And damn I love it.

    But what I have next to me is my post-it notes. As I mentioned yesterday, I bloody love my post-it notes.

    They will transform your business. And here’s how…

    1. Take one post-it note a day (one of the square ones). You’re not allowed any more.
    2. Write the one thing that must be done that day at the top (in normal sized writing, none of this tiny writing please).
    3. Under it put the next most important thing to do that day.
    4. Repeat until you hit the bottom of the note. You’ll get around four or five things on it.

    Those are the only things you’re allowed to do on your business that day. Start at the top and work down, crossing them off as you go.

    When you’ve finished, do the same thing for tomorrow so you’re all ready to go.

    That’s it. Simple but phenomenally effective.

    It forces you to focus only on the most important things. It gives you manageable goals each day, and the physical action of crossing them off with a pencil will psychologically give you the sense of achieving those goals and moving forwards.

    Which means it also has the benefit of preventing overwhelm, because you’ve got to prioritise.

    And if you’re feeling overwhelm then let me clear that up now. There’s only one thing you need to do to make money online… build a mailing list.

    Which means you need this.

    You can make do without anything else, including a website, but you cannot make do without a mailing list. Building that should be your only priority.

    You know dogs sniff each others butts. It’s one of the ways they learn about another dog in just a few seconds.

    And if you asked them to stop… it’d be impossible for them to do it.

    It’s just part of their genetic makeup.

    Humans have a similar genetic desire to follow other humans. That’s why there are so few true leaders in the world.

    It’s instinct to not want to stand out from the crowd. It’s instinct to want to follow other people. It’s instinct to want to do what other people do.

    But, unlike dogs, we can make a conscious decision to not do that. To do things differently.

    We don’t have to spend our life going round sniffing other dogs butts.

    Ask yourself, have you ever bought a product to grow your business and then followed it to the letter only for it to fail?

    Have you tried strategies that other people are using, followed them exactly, step-by-step, only to discover they don’t work for you.

    Wonder why?

    Because you’ve got to stop sniffing butts.

    Let me explain…

    Nearly ten years ago I was reading everything I could, following other people and doing my best to build an online business.

    How did I get on… I sucked!

    After about 18 months I came to a realisation. Following exactly what other people were doing was never going to work. What I needed to do was to learn what they were doing and then put my own spin on it.

    The minute I started doing that I began to make real progress.

    And here’s the reason…

    The techniques and strategies people use to make themselves successful have usually been learned over years, and adjusted to suit their working style, personality and time available. There’ll have been an element of trial and error to get it working for them exactly how they need it to.

    When you take it on exactly, guess what… it’s not going to work in the same way because your working style, personality and time available are going to be completely different.

    I’m not saying don’t listen to anybody. What I’m saying is learn what others are doing, and then adapt it to work for you, in your circumstances. It’s the people who adapt what they learn to suit them that are successful.

    On Friday I promised that I’d give you the third type of person. The type of person who’s seriously going to rock your world. The type of person that you should be following.

    Last week we looked at Type One, the people who are full of crap, and Type Two, the nice guys who don’t actually want you to have too much success.

    This week I wanna introduce you to Type 3… these are the people that you want to follow. These are the people who are going to explode your business. These are the people…

    …who don’t primarily work in the internet marketing space. 

    Whaaaaaaat!?

    I’m talking about the folk who’re just doing what they do every day and doing it phenomenally successfully.

    The people who have online businesses in some of the most competitive industries in the world, like Gambling and Dating.

    Go out there and join their mailing lists, if don’t want to get that stuff to your main email then create another email address and join their lists using that.

    Because these are the folk who aren’t teaching what they’re doing… they’re just making a ton of money doing it.

    And that’s who you want to follow.

    Look at how often they’re sending emails. How they’re doing launches. How they’re promoting. How they’re writing their copy.

    Watch and learn. Because that’s where the real good stuff is. That’s the kind of stuff that you can’t buy.

    And heck, it’s good to realise that you can make money in other markets that aren’t about teaching people how to make money online.

    When you follow these people and realise that, you’ll suddenly see how simple making money online can be. There doesn’t have to be all this complicated stuff going on. You don’t need to be doing a thousand things at the same time.

    What you need to do, is pick your approach and then go for it guns blazing.

    So here’s my challenge…

    Go out today and find five websites that are major players in their markets. They can’t be anything to do with IM, Biz Opp or Make Money Online. Join their mailing lists. Look at their websites. Look at their sales copy. Read every email they send, but look at it to see what they’re doing and how they’re doing it not as a customer.

    Are the emails auto-responders? Are they broadcasts? How often do they send them? How do they put together launches? Are you getting Facebook adverts to them? How did you find them?

    Start answering these questions and you’ll start figuring out how to solve the puzzle of making money online.
