    It’s been a difficult and strange month. If you’ve recently joined my mailing list then you may not know that my dad passed away very unexpectedly one month ago today, and I took a break from everything.

    I was barely writing at all, other people have been keeping my business going and I just went and got some space.

    It was something I definitely needed to do to get some perspective.

    And it’s kinda like what happens when you take steroids that are too strong for you.

    That happened to me a number of years ago after I nearly killed myself in a Mexican jungle while trekking with the Lacandon people.

    By the time I got back to the UK they were giving me all sorts of drugs to try and make me well, including high dosages of steroids (nasty things). I was getting these strange out-of-body experiences where I could see myself doing things.

    But that’s another story for another time.

    Getting perspective is very important. It’s particularly important for your business. You may want to be trying a bunch of stuff, but in reality you don’t need to do most of it.

    As humans we like to make things complicated. Don’t.

    Alone in the Crowd

    You can be surrounded by hundreds and thousands of people yet feel lonely.

    Sometimes you may feel exactly like that online!

    You’re surrounded by people who seem to be making this internet marketing thing work for them, but you just can’t get it working yourself.

    Wherever you turn you’re reading about online success, but whatever you try it doesn’t happen for you.

    That’s lonely.

    But I promise you’re not alone.

    In fact for every person who’s successful online, there are hundreds of people who aren’t.

    And the primary reason for this is… focusing on the wrong thing!

    Without fail whenever I tell people I make my living online I get asked a barrage of questions like…

    How much do you make?

    Do you only work two hours a day?

    Is it easy?

    How can I make money online?

    Those are the wrong questions and if you’re asking them then you’re setting yourself up to fail.

    In my experience there are very few people who will succeed when their motivation is only about making money. Yet almost everyone I speak to who’s at the beginning of their online journey are only focusing on making themselves money.

    Wrong my pretties.

    You’re going to need to change your thinking to ask how you can help other people.

    And I don’t necessarily mean how you’re going to help them to make money, it could be how to help them stop their children crying. It doesn’t matter, but you have to want to help them rather than you.

    Because if you’re only looking to make money then you’re only looking to help yourself, and that’s going to be as obvious as if you’d dipped your head in green paint.

    So stop thinking about yourself. Think about who you want to help and how you want to help them. Think about the knowledge you’ve learned over the course of your life and what would be useful to others.

    Then share it with them 😉

    When you’re thinking like this, then I can help you to use that to make yourself a living online.

  • Strange Sensations

    Strange Sensations

    This is probably one of the strangest weeks of my life. It was my birthday on Sunday and it’s my dad’s funeral on Thursday.

    That creates a very strange sensation.

    My dad was a story-teller. Heck, he wasn’t just a story teller, he was probably the best damn story-teller I’ve ever known.

    But while he could have a room packed with people in suspense one second and laughing the next, for some reason when he wrote it down on paper it just wasn’t the same.

    That didn’t stop him though. He wrote up to four books a year.

    Pretty damn impressive.

    Over the years I tried to get him to work with a ghost-writer. Somebody who could record him telling his stories and then put them down on paper for him. But he never wanted to.

    Which means that only very few ever got published.

    Now that’s okay. Because he used his writing as a cathartic process. In fact, it wasn’t really about selling books at all for him.

    But for those of us who are about bizniss, we can take a very important lesson from this.

    Focus on what you’re good at, whether that’s writing stories, product creation, copy writing, website development. It doesn’t matter. And then… find someone else to do all the other stuff.

    You’re time will always be better spent working on the thing you’re best at.

    And ultimately… if you build your bizniss this way then it’s completely scaleable. Try doing everything yourself and you’ll end up having a break down.

    If you’re not sure what you’re best at and are gonna go out and learn something. Then learn how to build profitable email lists. Do that and you’ll never need to “work” again.

  • Radio Silence

    Radio Silence

    It’s been nearly a week since my last email. Which is pretty unusual for me. The reason for that is my dad died unexpectedly last week.

    And to be honest I’ve been struggling.

    Then I saw a reply to the post I made in Facebook.

    “The lesson that cost me a fortune and then saved me a lifetime of work: Only focus on the things that matter.”

    The reply was…

    ““Don’t sweat the small stuff”. Thanks for the reminder.”

    And that hit home today.

    I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching, asking a lot of questions and talking almost non-stop about my dad.

    Then I saw that reply on FB and thought… it’s time to start writing again. It’s time to share some of the incredibly important things which, in some cases, I already knew but had lost to the noise of life. Others are completely new realisations.

    But right now I want to remind you that… the small stuff really doesn’t matter.

    If you don’t keep reminding yourself of that then your life gets taken over with the small stuff, while the big stuff gets pushed to the background.

    It’s exactly the same in business and is commonly referred to as the Pareto principle or the 80/20 law.

    80% of your success WILL come from 20% of your work.

    Which means, unless you’re already kinda amazing, that… 80% of the stuff you’re doing right now you don’t need to be doing.

    You could be spending that time with your family and friends with pretty much no change in the amount of money you earn or the success of your business.

    So one recommendation…

    Go and do it. Right now. Don’t sit on the fence. Make it happen today.

    Do You Want THIS Kind Of Empire?

    Money money money. As the famous song starts.

    As a species we’re obsessed with money and material goods. We want the best money can buy.

    Why?

    Does that bring you happiness?

    I’ve recently got into watching the T.V. series Empire, I was watching an episode last night after having finished off the British movie Hector’s And The Search For Happiness.

    It was an interesting juxtaposition.

    Empire is all about people who’ve made themselves into billionaires. They can afford whatever the heck they want, when they want it.

    Hector’s…. I won’t write that ridiculously long film name again… is about a psychiatrist trying to discover what happiness is for different people.

    The thing about Empire is it shows one thing… insane amounts of money just makes your life unpleasant.

    Which got me to thinking about how T.V. studios and Hollywood portray billionaires on-screen.

    Pretty much every single one is shown with all this awesome stuff. The kinda thing you look at and go… yeah, I’d love to have a house like that.

    But when you look at the character thats being portrayed, 99.99% of the time they’re deeply unhappy.

    It’s an old phrase which is worn out now, but I honestly believe money doesn’t buy happiness.

    Yup it buys all kinda shit that’s great to have, and it can certainly make for an easier life (financially speaking). But it doesn’t make you happy.

    Ask yourself… What makes you truly happy?

    For me it’s friends, family and being able to spend time with them (and a little bit of travel).

    I need to pay the bills.

    But other than that I work to live.

    Which means I want to work as little as possible, maximise the amount I earn in that timeframe and then go and do the stuff that makes me truly happy.

    If you’re wondering why I’m telling you this, it’s because to be successful you need to focus on what makes you happy.

    Not what you think should have.

    Until you find that, you’re going to struggle to be successful because you won’t be enjoying what you do.

    So ask yourself now, and answer honestly…

    What is it that truly makes you happy?

    What is that you would like to be able to do more of so that you go to sleep every night thankful for the life you’re living?

    Answer those and then start to structure your business in such a way that it will give them to you.

    Because that’s the true purpose of running your own business, being your own boss and not having anybody dictating what you do and when you do it.
