I’m going to say this once

I’m feeling pretty rough, currently sitting wrapped up with a viral throat infection tippety tapping away at my keyboard.

It’s days like this when the realisation of owning an online business smacks you in the face. Because I’m feeling like turd but woke up to see sales still coming in.

Anyhoo I digress…

I’ve had a few emails asking me what a domain is. This really isn’t my thang, yes I know what a domain is and I’ll explain in a minute. But it’s not my thang because I want to share with you how to make money online, not how to do the tech stuff.

But if you don’t know what a domain is you could be struggling. So…

Every server on the planet is located by something known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address. This is a number which specifies where that server is and how someone browsing the web can find it.

A domain name is something that makes sense (rather than a series of random numbers). When you buy a domain name like www.michaelwilding.com you then point it at a server (which has an IP address).

Now when someone visits your domain name they are directed to the server that has your website saved on it and it can be found via it’s IP address.

Yeah it can get a whole lot more complicated than that, but it doesn’t need to because you don’t need to understand the details to be able to build a website or make money. All you need to do is:

A) Register a domain name

B) Get hosting

C) Ask your domain registrar to point your domain name to your hosting

D) Install WordPress and build your website

Personally I use GoDaddy to purchase my domain names but a lot of people in our FB group use NameCheap.

You can get your hosting from LiquidWeb, which has excellent support and is very reliable.

And WordPress is free 🙂

Right I’m going to curl up in a corner and try to get rid of this virus. And then I’ll be back to talking about our favourite topic… making money online.

Michael
