These guys were marketing the shit out of you half a century ago

McDonalds is one of the biggest brands in the world.

But how did it get there?

It started back in 1937 when Patrick McDonald opened his first food-stand selling hot dogs.

But it began it’s real journey in 1940, when his two sons joined the business and changed its name to McDonald’s Bar-B-Que.

Richard and Maurice, Patrick’s sons, were obsessed with efficiency. So much so that in 1948 they decided to re-design their kitchen to achieve the maximum efficiency when the store re-opened as McDonalds.

However, it turned out that it wasn’t efficient enough for them, and in 1952 they decided to improve it further.

So, with a piece of chalk, they mapped out their kitchen on a tennis court.

It was during this change that they decided to re-brand their restaurant and employed a local architect. This architect, Stanley Clark Mestion, helped them create the high gloss surfaces of red and white, the stainless steel brightly coloured sheet metals, and the now famous golden arches.

All that’s great, but it’s what they did with their marketing at this stage that really interests us.

We think we’re good at marketing.

And by “we”, I mean the modern world.

But we’re doing the same s**t these guys were doing half a century ago and calling it new.

Heck, they were doing it better than us, because they invented stuff that was so far ahead of their time it’s like a flying a plane in the 1300’s!

For example, back in 1952 they…

    * Turned off the heating to prevent people wanting to stay too long
    * Angled the seating so customers were over their food which promoted them to eat faster
    * Put the seats further apart, making it a less sociable place to eat
    * Used cone shaped cups so customers had to hold their drink while they ate, making them eat faster

That’s some clever ways of getting people in and out as fast as possible.

In fact, it was so clever that all the other fast-food chains started following suit.

Today, they do things like pump the air with a patented smell, which is why you always know when you’re near a McDonalds!

Imagine what they were told when they first suggested these ideas.

They were probably laughed at, mocked and told it would never work. But they went ahead and did it anyway.

    Why?

Because the only real way to know if something’s going to work is by trying it.

And that means you have to take risk.

But I’m not talking about financial risk, although that sometimes goes hand-in-hand.

I’m talking about the risk of failing.

Without taking that risk you won’t know if your plan’s going to work.

And that’s why failing is the best thing you can do if you want to be a success!

  • My 9 month old son taught me this…

My 9 month old son taught me this…

Max, my son, is nine months old and he just taught me how I should do things.

He’s beginning to walk at the moment, and here’s what happens…

    He tries to stand.
    He falls down.
    He tries to stand.
    He falls down.
He puts his arms out for support.
    He stands.
    He starts to walk.
He lets go of your hands.
    He falls down.
He puts his arms out for support.
    He stands.
    He starts to walk.
He lets go of your hands.
    He falls down.

And he keeps doing this all day. He doesn’t get bored of it, he keeps going and going and going.

    The result?

Each day he manages to get a bit closer to standing up on his own.

Each day he manages to walk a little bit further on his own.

    Does he get frustrated?

Hell yes. And he screams at us when he does.

    Does that stop him?

    No friggin way!

He gets back up and does it again.

Which is exactly what most adults wanting to do something, don’t do.

Those of us who want to learn internet marketing are the worst. Usually because we’ve been lured in with false promises of overnight success and riches.

The truth is, we need to do exactly what Max is showing us to do.

We need to understand, truly understand, that we’re not going to learn how to do this overnight.

We need to understand, truly understand, that we’re going to get frustrated and pissed off.

We need to understand, truly understand, that if we want to succeed then we need to keep failing, because every time we fail we get a bit closer to succeeding.

And if you truly understand all those things, then you want to add yourself to the waiting list below, because when the doors re-open I’m going to show you how to become successful.

  • What a cluster f**k

    What a cluster f**k

So I went to the docs this morning, and he told me that I have what is known as a cluster headache, and… it can go on for months!

I’ve got to drink more fluids, get an eye test, take paracetamol and ibuprofen, use Vics Vaporub.

    But here’s the scooby…

You can’t take too much paracetamol or ibuprofen, because otherwise… it gives you a headache!

If it hasn’t gone in the next week or so, I have to go back to be referred for a scan.

Ah, what a great start to the week!

Having never really had headaches in my life, I am really feeling for people who get them regularly.

Personally, I think I need a damn good holiday.

To top it all off, my mum moves up here into her new home this week, and we’re doing a product re-launch on Thursday.

Some weeks you wish were finished before they begin, and this is going to be one of them.

    Hey ho.

Luckily for me we work in a world where I can still make a living even if I’m not working every day.

Which is the beauty of internet marketing.

And if you want to know how to make it big online, then you’d better register on this waiting list:

It’s closed at the moment, but very soon we’ll be opening up the doors to the new digital version!

    Ciao,

  • Tooth cracking pain

    Tooth cracking pain

I was at the dentist yesterday, and the great news was that…

I’ve basically got no enamel left on my teeth.

    Whoop whoop.

I’m what they call a grinder.

They used to call me that in my younger days too 😉

Anyhoo… since you stop producing enamel when you’re thriteen years old, that’s left me kinda screwed.

Some kind of glass plate was added to my worst tooth and I was sent home with high-flouride toothpaste.

TBH, I’m not particularly keen on using high fluoride toothpaste twice a day, I know it can cause all sorts of other issues.

So I’m now on the lookout for something natural that can do the same job.

If you’ve got any suggestions then please let me know by hitting the reply button on this email.

A very interesting piece of information I found out, was that the human bite will grind through anything.

It doesn’t matter what you put on your teeth, they will eventually grind through it.

You can get a metal spacer that opens your mouth a bit to try and stop the grinding at night, but I doubt I’d use it.

Luckily, grinding when it comes to content marketing is exactly what you want to do.

By grinding out regular, high quality content, you are able to crush your competition.

    How do you do it?

Easily. Simply choose one of the below types of blog content and write a five hundred to a thousand words on it each day.

If you really want to be awesome go for three to five thousand words with lots of images. That will kick everyone else in the ass.

Here’s the list of blog post types. The first few days the writing may be tough, but the more you do, the better you’ll get.

    1) How-to tutorials
    2) Lists
    3) Resource lists
    4) Cheat-sheets
    5) Reviews
    6) Controvesial post on passionate subjects
    7) Infographics
    8) Videos
    9) Interviews
    10) Blog series

If you want to learn how to write content faster than any normal human is capable of.

    Check out this blog post.

  • The Art Of Using Storytelling To Sell

The Art Of Using Storytelling To Sell

For the last few days I’ve been writing the August edition of Business Ignition, and it’s all about using the art of storytelling in your marketing.

And I’m so friggin excited by it I could cry.

You see if you want to sell anything, and I literally mean anything, then you need to be able to tell stories.

I don’t care if you sell mud, you’\ll be able to sell whole lot more of it if you do it using storytelling!

Inside the magazine I will be sharing:

    * How to find endless content ideas
    * How to master the art of storytelling
    * The essential elements of a story
    * How to keep your readers beggin for more
    * When to sell your product
    * Making sure you don’t over-complicate things

Because here’s the trooth… selling is easy, but everybody tries to make it hard.

Why do they try to make it hard?

Because there’s a whole billion dollar industry out there which is based around teaching folk how to sell.

If everybody realised how easy it actually was to sell, then whole buncha people wouldn’t be making any money.

But I like to say things as they are.

And the trooth is… it’s pretty damn easy to sell.

    Here are the steps:

    1) Get an audience
    2) Ask the audience what causes them the most pain
    3) Make a product that solves that pain
    4) Write them great stories every day
    5) Sell your product in every story

    Full stop.

The first three steps are as easy as they sound. Build an audience and ask them the question.

People don’t like asking their audience questions. It’s weird. Don’t freak out about it, just do it. It brings you closer to them and you can get the answers you need to make your product.

    Master the art of storytelling.

Which is what I’m teaching in this month’s Business Ignition. It’s closed to new members, but I will be opening up 11 spaces at the beginning of August.\

Here’s where you need to put your name down if you want a chance of being one of the eleven.

    https://michaelwilding.com/business-ignition

Then tell stories to your audience every day.

    Have a great weekend.

    Michael
