Escape from Alcatraz

Do you remember the movie with Clint Eastwood where he escapes by chipping away at the concrete cell grates?

Well… it turns out that it’s a true story!

In 2013 the FBI re-opened an investigation into the escape fo three inmates who broke out of Alcatraz in 1962, after receiving a letter from someone claiming to be one of the escapees.

After the last bed check at 9pm, they used a homemade drill from a broken vacuum cleaner to widen the vents in the cell to drill into the concrete around the cell vents.

They then squeezed through these vents and pipework and made it up to the roof.

To get from the island to the mainland, they used a collection of rain coats and life jackets as sails.

The writer of the letter says:

If you announce on TV that I will be promised to first go to jail for no more than a year and get medical attention, I will write back to let you know exactly where I am. This is no joke…

He is currently suffering from cancer.

It just goes to show that if you want something badly enough you can achieve it, even escaping one of the worlds most notorious prisons.

In comparison to that, everything else is easy. It’s just a matter of perspective 😉
