18 Things Facebook Knows About You (that you don’t!)

Every day that goes past there’s another news story about social media and the amount of data they posess on you, and each time it gets a little bit more freaky.

The reason for this, as I personally see it, is because all these social media companies are worth hundreds of millions, even billions of dollars.

But… they don’t actually make that much money.

Why are they valued so highly if they’re not making much money?

Because they hold so much data on people, and in theory that can be used to make money.

Only problem is… using that data is getting pretty hard without extra permissions. They don’t want to ask your permission because, let’s be honest, you’ll probably say no. However, if they don’t use that data to make money then their company becomes valueless.

Tricky position to be in as a business.

Today’s story about Facebook is yet another example of the freakiness of what’s going on.

Let me know what you think by hitting the reply button.\Over ‘n out,

Where Your Brand Is Going Wrong With Paid Social

The Must-Read Guide For Advertising On Social Media

Written by Jay Baer, this article is a must-not-miss if you use paid advertising on social media.

Like paid search before it, paid social has become a hotspot of competition within the digital marketing world. More and more, people are looking to it to diversify their ad spending. It’s an arena rich with opportunity, but also with plenty of room for error.

We all know that the only constant with social platforms is change; you simply cannot build your brand effectively via paid social advertising if you’re not continuously examining, learning, and refining your approach.

Pattern89’s recent webinar on the Anatomy of A Social Ad is full of gems about how to do just that.

  • The dawn of a new era

Having just come back from a weeks holiday in Crete, I’ve decided to change everything.

The holiday was incredible, we stayed in this beautiful hotel called the Abaton. If you’re looking for somewhere to completely relax and unwind, then this is the place to go. Here’s what our room looked like…

Relaxing allows the mind to wander, to contemplate and from that comes new ideas.

One of my ideas is to transform this newsletter slightly. You’ll already notice that the email design has changed, I hope you like the new look.

But the biggest change is what I’m calling “entrepreneurial shots”.

Every day I will be finding the three best stories, how-to’s, strategies, approaches and just plain humorous tales from the world of business, internet marketing and entrepreneurialism and sharing them with you in this newsletter (along with my personal brand of commentary).

Since I look at over thirty websites and blogs each day, it seems sensible for me to share this work with you by distilling it down into drinkable shots.

So let’s begin with the first day of entrepreneurial shot.

Using Facebook Messenger And Chatbots To Grow Your Audience

Automated Conversations… Should You Use It?

There’s a growing trend of using artificial intelligence in support and sales to do the work of responding to questions.

It’s estimated that by 2020 over 80% of all interaction online will be done without you interacting with a real human.

    Seriously?!

    Yup, I’m deadly serious.

Personally, I’m not going to be using them, it just feels wrong (at the moment). However, they’re big news and they’re big business.

So… if you’ve been considering using them, and let’s be honest you probably have been, then you better make sure you know what you’re doing.

This article with give you some beginning guidance on it.

4 Ways to Develop the People Skills You Need to Grow Your Business

The Science Of The First Impression

There’s no doubt that you will grow your business faster if you are comfortable interacting with people.

And if you’re interacting with people then you’re gonna need some people skills.

    You will either be:

    a) Terrified of networking

    b) Uncomfortable with networking

    c) A networking god

Very few people naturally fall into category (c). There will be some, but the chances are you’re not one of them.

Which means you’re either going to be uncomfortable, at best, or flat-out terrified of it.

But don’t worry, it’s something you can learn.

The best way to learn is to force yourself to do it, but before you do that there are some basics you can put in place to make it as easy as possible.

And these are some of them.

    Facebook You Asshole

    The Two-Sided Tosspots

You may have figured from the headline that I am not currently Facebook’s biggest fan.

    Why?

Because it seems to me that the entire (published) principles of why Facebook was created have already been forgotten in the short time it’s been around.

They’ve reportedly given user data to 60 companies.

I mean… who the f**k do they think they are.

Or is it just they’re not making enough money for their shareholders and have suddenly found how hard it is to actually sell user data, which is what the entire businesses value is based on.

Problem with that valuation is… if you can’t sell it then suddenly your business has no value.

    Ooooops.

Apple, Amazon, Samsung and Microsoft are amongst the sixty companies that had data sharing agreements with Facebook.

    It’s now being claimed that:

Without explicit consent, device makers were allowed to access data of users’ friends, even after Facebook said it would not share such information.

Whether it’s true I don’t know, but every time I hear another story about Facebook my trust disappears that little bit further.

You can get the whole story on Business Insider here.

  • Social Media… Can you be arsed?

Social Media… Can you be arsed?

I fall in and out of love with social media.

Honestly, I want to do it every day, but the truth of the matter is… often I just can’t be arsed. Or there are other things which push it to the bottom of the list and it doesn’t get done.

Not only that, but I flip between the platforms I’m most interested in using. For some reason I just can’t stick with one of them.

    Currently my favourite is Twitter.

However, every time I take a photo, I decide I really want to get into Instagram, because it appeals to me.

But there’s just not enough hours in the day.

I’ve tried outsourcing my social media, however it never works, it’s just not personal enough.

Of course, that could be because I’m too cheap to pay for the super-expensive social media companies to do the work for me. And let’s be honest, building a valuable audience on social media is hard work.

A couple of months ago I decided that I would make a minimum of one post a day on Twitter.

    The result…

    …pretty good.

When I actually did it, but once again I didn’t manage to keep it up for long enough.

    So what to do now?

Have you got any advice for keeping your interest up in posting to social media, or finding the time to do it?

  • How I spoke to Facebook

    How I spoke to Facebook

If you read my email from a few weeks ago, you’ll know that Facebook had randomly decided that my www.michaelwilding.com blog was malicious or abusive.

    No idea why.

It had been fine for nearly a decade. Then suddenly, one morning, I could no longer post links to my site.

I spent ages on Google, and tried everything I found.

    No luck.

    I tried contacting Facebook.

    No luck.

What the hell do you do in a situation like this?

You’re communicating with a faceless organisation who send stock replies without actually reading your messages.

A reader, Joshua, also got in touch with me saying the same thing had happened to him, and he’d got nowhere.

And then… he said something that got me thinking.

I went into the business manager for Facebook, and guess what?

They have a live support chat for their advertising.

Holy mother of god, I can actually speak to a real person.

Not only that, but a nice person, who knew what they were talking about.

The issue got escalated, and I was promised an email within the next 48 hours.

Expecting very little from it, I was shocked to find an email in the next few hours telling me that the listing was an error and had now been removed.

That’s possibly the first good, and it really was good, interaction I’ve ever had with Facebook support.

    The secret?

Use their business advertising support chat.

Of course, the question is why did it happen to start with!

Facebook claim it was an error.

    Me… I don’t think it was.

Just a few days before the block, I’d moved my DNS to CloudFlare and was using one of their free SSL certificates.

These certificates are shared amongst many users, which is why they’re free.

A few years ago Facebook was rejecting these SSL certificates as malicious.

However, due to the lack of IP addresses in the world, most SSL certificates are now shared.

What I think happened is… I moved to CloudFlare and my SSL changed from a dedicated one to a shared one. This flagged a warning in Facebook’s system and I got blocked.

Since having everything cleared and working again, I’ve purchased a dedicated SSL certificate through CloudFlare and have had no problems.

Was it the free SSL certificate they offered, or was it Facebook making a mistake?

Ultimately I’ll never know, but the issue is resolved.

What this highlights is that if your main assets are held by another company (e.g. a Facebook page) then at any time your business could dissappear over night.

Make sure that you are always in control of your core business.

    Over and out,

    Michael

  • The dictatorship of Facebook

    The dictatorship of Facebook

Today’s email is late… why? Because I wrote it, it was pretty lengthy, and then I hit the close button by mistake without saving it.

    Man that’s irritating!

I seem to do that at least once every few months.

    Hey ho.

It just means that today’s email is running later than normal 🙂

And to be honest, I was just having a rant.

Because Facebook are being a bunch of a**holes.

My personal Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/mikeywilding/ has been around for ages. I only recently started putting photos up on it.

Then… yesterday… I tried to reply to a comment from a friend and was told there was a URL in my profile that wasn’t safe.

    Eh?!

I checked my profile and there was a link to www.michaelwilding.com

But that has been there forever.

The only change I made yesterday was putting michaelwilding.com on CloudFlare as a DNS server.

That could be the reason, but it would be odd.

For whatever reason Instagram (or should I say Facebook) have decided that my personal blog has malicious content.

Any way to appeal it, or just ask a human being the reason?

    Nope.

It’s their way or no way.

And that really pees me off.

However, that’s life, so I’ll get over it.

The real interesting thing is whether CloudFlare is going to be worth using or not.

    Any thoughts?

    All the best,

    Michael

P.S. I’ve recently started up with PPV advertising again for one of my businesses, but getting 24,000 views in a couple of hours killed my server response time.

Which is one of the reasons I’ve started looking at using CloudFlare 😉

    I’ll keep you posted.
